Why principles beat patterns

Memorize 100 patterns and you'll still get stuck on the 101st. But once you understand the principles of leading (the direction of tension, how the hands and body split the work, when to give and when to receive), you can improvise your way through situations you've never seen before — right on the spot. That's why advanced dancers are so good at improvising.

Don't memorize patterns — learn the laws that never change.

Just one thing today

Today, instead of a new pattern, observe just one thing: which direction the tension flows in a two-hand lead. Once you can see the principle, the patterns untangle themselves.

“The lead is the bottom hand, not the top hand. She can turn perfectly well without the top hand at all.”

Calling out the habit of leading with both hands, and explaining which hand is actually doing the leading.

“Her turn isn't happening because you can't let go of that top hand.”

CONTEXTExplaining how the top hand — a lead you don't even need — ends up blocking the turn because you keep hanging on to it.

“Having the lead go into both hands at once is the most awkward thing for the guy. So you have to separate them and drill it that way.”
