You have to get down into the floor to use more of your body.

Tonio Kan's one-liner on grounding — float up and your body stops working. Press into the floor and let your weight drop, and suddenly there's room to move bigger and freer.

Why this video

When bachata looks light and floaty, it's usually because the floor isn't being used. Tonio Kan says to go the opposite way — "Be Grounded". Drop your weight down and press into the floor, and paradoxically your upper body frees up and your hips and moves come out bigger.

Why going down makes you bigger

The floor is where the power starts. Push into it with your feet and the reaction travels up — legs→core→upper body — loading your movement with force. If you're floating, that chain breaks and you end up dancing with just your arms. Grounding isn't about being 'heavy' — it's about being 'connected.'

Don't float up — get down into the floor.

Just one thing for today

In your basic, use your knees a little more and press the soles of your feet into the floor. Your body doesn't get heavier — you get more body to work with.

01WHAT THEY SAID

Lines worth chewing on — tap to jump to the moment.

If you want to dance bachata, you've got to drop your hips down and dance using more parts of your body.

Said at the top of class while setting up bachata's basic posture.

This position helps you use your hips, and it lets you stand more stable, so it helps you use your upper body too.

The bigger the energy you pull out of the music, the deeper you have to root down. There's no need to shoot upward.

In that moment when you use the majao, you have to commit, and carry over exactly what you learned in the patín.

Instead of making the change with a jump, you go down.

Correcting the habit of popping up when you create a change in a movement — you make that same change by dropping your weight instead.
